IWO and Arc’teryx are teaming up to offer five clinics for Indigenous women* during Arc’teryx Academy.

Join up to one event per day to level up your skills, share in community, and be part of an epic weekend on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw.

Friday, August 21:

Beginner Hike with Guide

  • Whether it’s your first time on trail or you’re looking to feel more confident in mountain environments, this beginner hike offers an accessible introduction to hiking in a supportive setting. Learn foundational movement skills, pacing, gear basics, and trail awareness while connecting with community and spending meaningful time outdoors. Guided by experienced mentors, this experience is designed to help you build confidence, ask questions, and take the next step in your outdoor journey.

  • This clinic is all about getting you off the gym walls and onto real rock. Spend a full day outside learning and dialing in climbing technique, belaying, rope management, and the fundamentals needed to enjoy climbing outside. Break down the gear you’ll use and walk through the key differences between indoor and outdoor climbing, so you feel confident in a new environment. Expect plenty of hands-on practice, lots of movement on the rock, and the kind of skills that set you up for a lifetime of climbing adventures.

Advanced Hike with Guide

  • Designed for experienced hikers looking to challenge themselves, this advanced hike explores more demanding terrain while building mountain travel confidence and decision-making skills. Participants should feel comfortable hiking for extended periods, managing elevation gain, and moving efficiently on uneven or technical trails. Guided by experienced leaders, this experience may include route-finding, pacing strategies, terrain assessment, and conversations around mountain safety and preparedness. Expect a rewarding day in the mountains, opportunities to refine your skills, and a strong sense of community with fellow experienced hikers.

Multi-Pitch with Guide

  • About:
    • In this clinic, we will cover everything you need to know to get you up and down a multi-pitch climb safely and efficiently.Some of the topics we’ll go over and practice hands-on are transitioning at belay stations between pitches, switching into rappelling mode, proper multi-pitch anchors, organizing a belay station, tips and techniques for hauling a pack, climbing as a group of 3, strategic day planning for longer routes, and more.
  • Pre-Requisites:
    • Must be comfortable climbing 5.7
    • Must have basic crack climbing skills and understanding of trad gear usage
    • Lead climbing skills are an asset but not necessary
  • What You Will Learn:
    • Recognizing/building good trad anchors
    • Recognizing/building good rappel anchors
    • Transitioning smoothly between pitches or from ascent to descent
    • How to organize your stations

Executive Director

Aiyana Anderson-MacIsaac is the Executive Director at Indigenous Women Outdoors (IWO). She began her journey with the organization in 2020 as a participant in IWO’s first-ever program, the Introduction to Backcountry Mentorship Program. She then joined the Board of Directors as a Board Secretary in 2022 and served until April 2025. In 2024, Aiyana created and led the Off-Piste and Introduction to Backcountry Safety program as a Program Lead.
