Tayvie Van Eeuwen is a mixed Ojibwe, Saulteaux, Métis, and settler woman living on the traditional, unceded, and ancestral territories of the Sḵwx̱ú7mesh, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm nations. Her grandfather’s paternal family comes from Black River Nation in Manitoba, from the lineage of Sarah Bird, and her grandfather’s maternal family comes from Red River Métis, from the lineage of the Woods, Bruce, and Kennedy families. She also holds mixed European ancestry, predominantly Irish, Scottish, and Dutch.
Tayvie has been on a reconnection journey since childhood due to the impacts of her mother’s adoption. She is proud to learn and share with her Indigenous family, and tend to her culture through attending cultural gatherings, learning Michif, and growing her beading and Woodlands art abilities. The land is where she finds her greatest inspiration and peace, and as a woman from Saulteaux descent, meaning “People of the Rapids,” she has a particular pull to the water.
She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice, and is currently pursuing her Master’s with a focus on community care. At Indigenous Women Outdoors, Tayvie helps share programming, opportunities to gather, stories, and Indigenous joy through social media.
